I am a decendant of William Hunter of Nansemond Co., VA, One of his sons was my direct line Nicholas. One of his sons was Isaac "the Northhampton" Hunter. His son Reuben, b. abt 1740,married wife Sarah Speight abt 1760 Wake Co., NC. He had brothers named Dempsey, Thomas, Isaac "of the Tavern",Jacob,Theophilus, and sisters Sarah, Alce. Reuben and Sarah had a son whom they called Dempsey, after his uncle Dempsey. Reuben's son Dempsey, b. abt 1766/67,VA. He had a son named John, born in Wake Co., NC abt 1810, died 1865 Franklin Co., Arkansas. Wife Elizabeth McMillian. John & Eliz. had 8 kids. My great grandfather named Montezuma(Monte), his son was Henry Sherman Hunter my grandfather and Bessie Williams Hunter had two daughters,my mother Doris Faye Hunter, Flossie Mae Hunter. Our family originally came from Alnwick, England. I believe a William Sr. came over on the ship "the Beauty" 1635-1636, wife Elizabeth Cohoun. There was another Nicholas who came over either brother or father of William. Are you from the direct line of Isaac the "Northhampton" Hunter line? or Issaac of the tavern" Hunter line?

I have just started the verification process of a genealogy done by my great aunt, Elizabeth Harris, of Seaboard. I glanced thru her list and found two names that might work for you: 1)Frank Roscoe Harris married Sallie Blunt PEEBLES , buried in Jackson. Issue: William Exum Harris, Frank Roscoe Harris, Jr. (d at 2), Henry Peebles Harris. 2)Lollie M Harris married John Thomas PEEBLES. (Uncle/Cousin Tom), buried in Jackson. Issue: Sarah Rebecca Peebles "Beck", 1911-1973, Mary Elizabeth Peebles, "Lib", 1915-1993 I will look for more as I go through all of her pages. Hope this helps. Susan

John Underwood
Posted on April 1, 2006 at 12:02:37 PM by
Douglas Underwood

I am searching for my ancestors. John Underwood came from England, married Dorcas Davis in Virginia in 1782 and moved to NC. He had two sons, John Jack Underwood, born in 1784 and Thomas Underwood born in 1786. The only documentation I can find on a John or a Thomas Underwood is the 1790 census showing them in Sykes district of Northampton County. Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to further research

Dear Douglas, I am also looking up my Underwood ancestors.I've only gotten as far back as 1834 with William and Louiser Underwood. These would be my great-great grandparents. They were all in Hertford County and most are buried at the Meherrin Baptist Church Graveyard. I don't know if these families connect but I hope you can help me.

Re(2): John Underwood

Douglas Underwood

My records do not indicate a William and Louisor Underwood as being related; however, I did check a few records and discoveredthe following: The 1850 and 1880 census list a Louisa and RW Underwood being born on approx same dates and they were in bertie County. The son Jown W that is burried in the Meherrin Baptist Church Graveyard is the same individual. The people that took the census in those days did not sometime transcribe info correctly and that could have lead to Louiser. Sorry I was not any more, if any, help.

His will was recorded in Northampton County, November 23, 1798, stated his plantation was on the east side of the Miry branch joining Josiah Granberry and Ure swamp.
