{"id":1160,"date":"2014-03-23T08:57:26","date_gmt":"2014-03-23T13:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ncgenweb-data.com\/histnews\/?p=1160"},"modified":"2014-03-23T08:57:26","modified_gmt":"2014-03-23T13:57:26","slug":"already-married-1889","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncgenweb-data.com\/histnews\/already-married-1889\/","title":{"rendered":"Already Married (1889)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A North Carolina Woman Who has Five Husbands Living<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Charlotte, NC, July 3 &#8211; Today <strong>Samuel NICKSON<\/strong> appeared before Register COBB and requested a marriage license for himself to <strong>Isabelle DAVIS.<\/strong> \u00a0License was promptly issued, but before it had been used it was discovered that the woman who was already married and that her husband was yet living. \u00a0Further investigation revealed the fact that she was a bigamist, and consequently a warrant for her arrest was put in the hands of an officer. \u00a0She was before a justice of the peace this evening. \u00a0The evidence was fast accumulated against her and soon it was proven that she now has living five husbands, four of whom live in this State and one in South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>The woman is now only about thirty-two years old. Her son, a lad about sixteen years old, testified against her in court. \u00a0She married the first time at the age of fifteen and has lived with no one husband eighteen months. \u00a0She was married first in 1872 to <strong>Amos JOHNSTON<\/strong>, and separated from him the following year. \u00a0In 1875 she married <strong>S.B. McCANE<\/strong>, and lived with him till Christmas of 1876. \u00a0Again in 1878 she married <strong>Rev. Abram McELMORE<\/strong>, and left him in 1879. \u00a0In 1885 she married <strong>Paul R. HALTON<\/strong>, and left him the same year, but only lived with him a few weeks. She married <strong>William R. FURGERSON<\/strong> last year but only lived with him a few weeks. \u00a0All are now living. \u00a0<strong>Paul R.
