{"id":1062,"date":"2014-03-16T23:47:19","date_gmt":"2014-03-17T04:47:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ncgenweb-data.com\/histnews\/?p=1062"},"modified":"2014-03-16T23:47:19","modified_gmt":"2014-03-17T04:47:19","slug":"vanderbilt-forest-1900","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncgenweb-data.com\/histnews\/vanderbilt-forest-1900\/","title":{"rendered":"Vanderbilt Forest (1900)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The pisag\u00a0<em>[sic]\u00a0<\/em>forest has cost <strong>VANDERBILT<\/strong> something like $250,000, or about $2.50 an acre. \u00a0He has brought it in great or small tracts as rapidly as possible, and now his rangers are the only denizens. \u00a0There are five of them, all picked men of the mountains, of fine physique, good riders and dead shots. \u00a0They must keep open the roads and trails, see that the boundary fence, 300 miles in length, is all right; keep out poachers, look after the game and the trout and always be on the alert for timber stealers. \u00a0There are 265 miles of trail in this forest, the trails leading alongside each trout stream. \u00a0There are 70 miles of road passable for wagon. There are miles of shooting paths, the latter 15 feet in width and cut out right and left from the roads. \u00a0When deer are driven they must cross these paths, and by means of the latter alone can the hunter see them in time to get a shot.<\/p>\n<p>Though <strong>Mr. VANDERBILT<\/strong> is not a sportsman, but a student, yet all things are kept ready for him. \u00a0His pleasure is the pleasure of others. \u00a0On his last visit he only caught one trout, nor did he fire a gun. \u00a0His wife was with him.
