  • Mr. J.F. AYERS has returned from a visit to Maryland and Virginia.
  • Miss Gertie MIZELLE, of Long Ridge, is the guest of relatives in the city.
  • The Alliance men say L.I. FAGAN, of Plymouth, or H.A. LEECHFIELD, of Creswell, will be our next Sheriff.  Both good men.
  • Rev. C.W. ROBINSON and Mess. S.M. WHALEY and W.C. AYERS were among the number that attended the Sam Jones meeting at Norfolk this week.
  • Miss Lethia NORMAN who has been in our town for the past three weeks as the guest of Mrs. Fannie NORMAN, returned to her home at Creswell on Wednesday.

Beacon Flashes (January 31, 1890)

The following items are extracted from the Beacon Flashes column:

  • Mr. O.J. SWAIN, of Columbia, gave us a call on Monday.
  • Miss Hope HUNTER has returned from a pleasant visit of two or three weeks to friends at Winston.
  • Mr. H. H. BROWN, accompanied by his son, Master Henry Ward, made a short visit to Washington this week.
  • Mr. William WHALEY, of Norfolk, Va., has been spending a few days with his father Mr. S.M. WHALEY, of this city.
  • We received a pleasant call on Tuesday from Mr. R.G. FRAMPTON, of Roper, general agent for the Brewster’s Safety Rein Holder.  This rein holder is something every man should have attached to his vehicle.

Relatives Thankful (1890)

Excerpted from the Beacon Flashes column:

The relatives and friends of the two colored men, Daniel BISHOP and James HART, who were drowned on Wednesday, return thanks to Mr. S.M. WHALEY for financial assistance rendered in the burial of the same.

City News (July 5, 1889)

City News

  • Mr. J.F. YEAGER has accepted position with HORNTHAL & Bros. as a salesman
  • Prof. John WHALEY of Norfolk visited his father Mr. S.M. WHALEY.
  • Chief Engineer, W.W. SEARBORO was summoned home by the illness of his wife.
  • Mrs. J. B. HUNTER has been visiting her sister Mrs. J.F. NORMAN 
  • Mr. W.C. AYERS gave his patent garlic machine a test on Tuesday.
  • Miss Ella BATEMAN, daughter of J.M. BATEMAN Esq, who has been ill, returned home much improved.
  • Mr. Geo. DIXON who has been a salesman for W.C. AYERS’ store, left for Edenton where he accepted a position on the “Eastern Advocate” a new paper for that town.
  • Mr. S.M. WHALEY left to visit his family in Norfolk. He will be moving his family to Norfolk soon.
