Beacon Flashes (August 15, 1890)

Excerpts from the Beacon Flashes column:

  • Mrs. J.W. BRYAN and daughter Jamie, are the guests of relatives at Jamesville.
  • Mrs. S.M. JACKSON and daughter, Miss Bertie, are visiting relatives in Jamesville.
  • Mrs. S.M. WHALEY and daughter, Miss Ida, went down to Nag’s Head on Wednesay.
  • Mr. B.F. OWENS our popular liveryman has purchase “Bob Lee,” a thoroughbred Hamiltonian colt three years old, can trot in 2:35.  Call at his stable on Main street if you want to see this, perhaps the fastest 3-year-old in the State
  • Mr. J.E. VINCENT, who has been visiting in Virginia for several days, returned on Monday.  Mr. VINCENT informs us he has severed his connection with the R.R.R. & L. Co., on Long Ridge, and will begin work, for the same company, just above Jamesville, in Martin county.  His family will remain in Plymouth, we are glad to say.

Beacon Flashes (August 8, 1890)

The following items are extracted from the Beacon Flashes column:

  • Mr. Willie OWENS of Creswell was in the city this week the guest of his uncle, Mr. B.F. OWENS.
  • Miss Maggie MORGAN, of Richmond, Va., is the guest of her sisters, Mrs. J.O. MIDGETT and Miss Chlode MORGAN.
  • Miss Mattie VINCENT, who has been visiting her brother, Mr. J.E. VINCENT, returned to her home on Friday last.
  • After a pleasant visit of three weeks to friends in Hyde county, Miss Mary SMITH returned home on Saturday last.
  • Mr. Will DENHARDT, who has been in the employ of A.M. WALKER, at this place during the past year, has returned to his old home in Baltimore.  We regret giving you up, Will.
  • I.C. MARRINER has opened a saloon in R.F. BUTLER’s old stand, and has secured the services of Mr. R.B. HAYES, a well-known saloon keeper of Eastern Carolina.  Don’t drink, but if you do, “Little Bob” can fix ’em up right in any style.  If you don’t believe it try him.
  • A telegram was received here yesterday sent to the Sheriff of the county from the authorities of Brunswick, Ga., asking if a young white man, one J.F. GAYLORD was wanted in this county.  Deputy Sheriff L.I. FAGAN replied at once that said GAYLORD wanted, and to have him arrested at once.  It will be remembered that young GAYLORD broke jail at this place on June 9th, and escaped together with Dennis ARNOLD.

Beacon Flashes (May 23, 1890)

Excerpts from the Beacon Flashes column:

  • Mayor LATHAM has erected a nice little cottage on East Main street for his own use.
  • Miss Lucille OWENS is visiting Greenville as the guest of her uncle, Hon. Louis C. LATHAM.
  • A pleasant call yesterday from Mr. Wheeler MARTIN a popular attorney from Williamston.
  • Mrs. H.T. HASSELL and children, of Creswell, have been visiting her mother, Mrs. T. MIDGETT, this week.
  • Miss Eva LEHMAN who was visiting her grandmother, Mrs. C.E. GOELETT, returned to her home in Raleigh on Friday last.  She was accompanied by her cousin, Miss Lizzie GOELETT.
  • Mr. B.F. OWENS has purchased from Mr. S. BAYNOR his livery business known as Kentucky Stables.  Mr. OWENS proposes to run both stables, the one on Main street also the Kentucky Stables on Water street. We wish him success.

Beacon Flashes (January 17, 1890)

  • Mr. B.F. OWENS received a fine horse from Baltimore yesterday.
  • Miss Mattie JOHNSON is teaching school at Cool Spring, near town.
  • Mr. T.J. MARRINER, Clerk Superior Court, spent the past week in Norfolk.
  • Mr. E.A. CARTER has returned from a visit to the western part of the State.
  • Misses Allie RODGERSON and Fannie MANNING are visiting friends at Scotland Neck.
  • Mr. Eddie TARKENTON, formerly with J.O. MIDGETT, has accepted a position with J.W. BRYAN, druggist.
  • Geo. McDONALD has opened a bar at the old stand of W.H. WEST, and says “the old man is not dead yet.”
  • Dr. H.H. NORMAN having permanently located in Plymouth, offers his professional services to the public.
  • Mr. Eddie YEAGER, after an absence of several years, is home on a visit to his father, Mr. N.B. YEAGER.
  • Mr. Clarence LATHAM, assistant Post Master, is taking a vacation, and in his absence the position is filled by Mr. Eugene MARRINER.
  • We are informed that Mr. H.A. PRINCE will build a large shingle mill on the site where his grist was burned.  Mr. PRINCE is an energetic man and we trust that any effort made by him will be crowned with success.
