  • Mr. Louis SUMMERELL, whom we reported as being quite sick last week has entirely recovered from his attack. (pg. 3)

  • On Friday last George RUSSEL, colored, while sawing wood at Maj. RIGBY’s steam mill received a severe injury. A splinter saw off from the wood and struck him in the face cutting him in the bridge of his nose.  The injury is not serious, though he is still confined to his bed.

State News

  • Tarboro Southener: Herbert PENDER, son of J.J.B. PENDER, has been appointed by the Commissioners to Chapel Hill from this county.
  • We learn that two men were killed at Snow Hill on Monday. One a Mr. PITTMAN, of Lenoir county, was killed by the accidental discharge of a pistol in the handle of a negro. The other was a negro hand on the steamer Contestness, who fell in the creek and was drowned – Greenville Express

Lewis SUMERELL is Ill (1879)

We regret to hear of the serious illness of Mr. Lewis SUMMERELL of Northampton, with pneumonia. We trust he may be soon restored to health.

Married – Col. G.S. BELLIS of Littleton was on yesterday married to Mrs. Charles ALLEN. We wish all happiness and every joy.

JENNETT, Thomas W. (d. 1879)

Foul Murder At Middleton, NC. — We learn from a private letter received by a prominent citizen at Norfolk, that on Thursday night, the 19th ult., Jeremiah F. COX, of Middleton, NC., struck his son-in-law, Thomas W. JENNETT, upon the head with a club, injuring him so badly that he lived but a few hours.  His skull was so badly crushed the brains being mashed and badly contused.  COX was committed to jail to await trial at the May term office County court.  The murder was an unproved and deliberate one — Norfolk Landmark
