SMITH, David (Gen) – (d. 1835)

Gen. David SMITH, the father-in-law of Gov. RUNNELS, died in Mississippi, on the 4th ultimo., in the 83d year of his age.  He was born in Cumberland county, NC 1753; bore a conspicuous part in the war of Independence, moved successively to Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi, and headed a company of volunteers in the Indian war under Gen. JACKSON – was foremost in the battles of the Horse shoe, Talladega, &c.  He died beloved and respected by all, and honoured by the state in whose limits his body reposes.

Shocking Casualty at John RUSSELL’s House (1836)

Shocking Casualty — A young lady was burnt to death at Mr. John RUSSELL‘s house, near the mouth of Coddle creek, Cabarrus county, on the 18th ult. She came into the house from the cotton patch, and in the act of kindling the fire, her clothes caught, and were burned entirely off her body.

Dr. Thomas N. CAMERON, has been elected Magistrate of Police; Sampson BOON, James BAKER, Joseph AREY, John CAMPBELL, John SELPH, Joshua CARMON, James KYLE, Commissioners – all for the ensuing year.

Osborn – Run Away (1836)

Ran Away – From the Subscriber, on the night of the 3d October, a Negro man, by the name of Osborn, who was raised by Mr. Robert JEFFREYS, and was sold by a Mr. HUCKLAND to Allen DUNN, of Raleigh, from whom he was purchased by the subscriber.  Said Osborn is about 5 feet 5 1/2 inches high, between 35 and 40 years of age, of yellow complexion, thin visage, and tolerably large forehead, had on a white hat, black jeans coat, and other clothing not recollected.  Osborn has a wife at Mr. Thomas DEVEREAUX‘s and is lurking in the neighborhood of Wm. JEFFREYS‘ in Franklin county, he no doubt will try to pass as a free man, and endeavor to make his way for a free State. 

A reward of twenty five dollars will be given for the apprehension and delivery of said Negro, or for his being lodged in Jail, so that I get him again. — John H. FAUCETT.

New Post Office in Stokes County (1836)

Post Office — A new office as been established in Stokes county, called Pilotsville; and Thomas B. KING appointed Post Master.  Asa BALLARD has been appointed Postmaster at Webb’s Stokes county; Wm. HORNER, at Cameron’s Mills, Orange county; and Wm. HIGHTOWER, at Hightower’s, Caswell County.

DIED — At the Eagle Hotel, Norfolk, 19th ult., a fit of apoplexy, Willie McPHERSON, Esq., of Camden county in this state, and member of the state Convention, aged 60 years.
